In issue 35 of G&G Magazine, published in November 2022, the feature on the contemporary penthouse opens in the living room, with photography by Thomas Pagani. In front of the sofa lies Amini’s One of a Kind rug, designed by Carlotta Fortuna for the Tribal collection. Hand-knotted in Indian wool, it has an optical pattern of intersecting black and white lines. The brand belongs to ABC, the handmade rug company founded by Sultan Amini in Herat, Afghanistan, in 1962.

Behind the dining table hang two works by the American painter Stephen Rosenthal, the larger canvas Painting Ochre 306 (2006) and Ochre 506 (2007). They form part of his ochre and grey oil paintings from 2006 to 2008, in which forms barely emerge from a dense weave of fine brushstrokes. Rosenthal works by subtraction, removing much of a painting’s surface when it appears complete and leaving only faint traces. His work is held in the collections of MoMA in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.

At the kitchen counter stands Saba’s New York Soleil stool, from the New York collection by Sergio Bicego, who has worked with the company since 1993. Soleil was conceived for outdoor use and is brought indoors here. It retains the silhouette of the other New York seats, with a metal rod frame wrapped in polyester cord woven entirely by hand. The seat is upholstered in grey cotton velvet.

Beside the bed is Bonaldo’s Kadou side table, by the Japanese designer Ryosuke Fukusada. Its name means ‘the art of flowers’, and its form recalls Japanese flower arranging. Painted steel legs rise like branches, set asymmetrically between the top and base. Kadou marked the start of Fukusada’s collaboration with Bonaldo in 2013. The original design was a coat stand inspired by a traditional flower vase. Its branches later became the base of these tables.
